Tuvan hunters have destroyed a record number of wolves this year; the number of predators shot consisted of 669 individuals, which is one and half times more than in 2010, as reported by government of the republic.
The authorities in Tuva noted, that the discontinuance of systematic struggle with the predators in the early 1990's caused a fast increase in the numbers of wolves in Tuva, whose population to date has reached 2.5 - 3 thousand individuals (380-400 packs). The predators cause damage to the herders of the region, counting in dozens of millions of rubles.
As a result of measures adopted in 2010, specialists destroyed a maximum number of wolves at this time - 433 individuals.
"In 11 months of this year, 669 predators have been destroyed, regardless of the fact that some districts of Tuva do not fulfill the plan in regulation of their numbers," - the report states.
The government of the republic has allocated 3.25 million rubles for premiums for wolf hunters in 2011, which stimulated activisation of the fight with these predators.
