Tuvan physicians believe that Fedor Konyukhov’s deterioration of health was caused by tick-bite rickettsiasis. On June 11, because of acute deterioration of his health, the famous traveler was met by a team of Tuvan health workers at the border-crossing point in Khandagaity, and transported to the infectious disease hospital in Kyzyl, where he is now receiving medical help. According to the government press-agency of Tuva, quoting the minister of health protection, Aleksandr Oorzhak, Konyukhov’s condition is now stable. He is being treated with antibiotics, detoxification and symptomatic therapy.
Yesterday, a special government delegate from Kalmykia, Vasilii Tserenov, came to Tuva. A telephone call between the heads of Tuva and Kalmykia, Sholban Kara-ool and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov also took place.
“Fedor Konyukhov is receiving quality medical care in Tuva. We consider it necessary that his treatment and observation continue in Kyzyl,”- Tuvan government press-agency quotes Tserenov.
Fedor Konyukhov is the leader of the international expedition “Along the Great Silk Road”, which started on May 13 in Ulan-Bator.
The camel caravan has already gone through most of the trip through Mongolia, and is approaching the Russian-Mongolian border at the Tashakta (Altai) crossing point.
Fedor Konyukhov felt the first indication of disease on June 3. Because of acute deterioration of his health status, he had to temporarily interrupt his participation in the project and seek medical help in the hospital of Ulangom, the administrative center of Uvs-Nuur aimak in Mongolia. However, here they proved to be unable to provide suitable medical help.
According to preliminary data, Fedor Konyukhov is expected to remain hospitalized in Kyzyl until the beginning of next week, according to the government press-agency of Kalmykia.
At the same time, the expedition continues, despite the absence of the leader. As is well known, the expedition is being performed in the framework of celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the Kalmyk nation’s voluntary entrance into the Russian State system.
