This Summer Tuva Receives Throat Singers from All Over the World

The international symposium "Khoomei: Cultural Phenomenon of the Peoples of Central Asia" will take place in Tuva July 25-27, reported "Tuva-Online" in the Ministry of Culture of the republic.  This is one of the biggest events of the Year of Khoomei declared in Tuva.  Already today in
the ministry people are talking about the enormous interest in the symposium, which scientists as well as khoomei-performers from around the world will take part in. The honored guests who will arrive in Kyzyl include representatives of UNESCO.
Tuva tries to achieve the inclusion of khoomei in the list of objects of world nonmaterial cultural heritage of UNESCO. "There is a lot of preparation going on.  There will be many guests.  And not only from Russian regions where throat singing is performed, but also beyond.  In addition to the usual festival participants from Japan and France, there will also be performers from Switzerland and Canada. A large group signed up from the region of Inner Mongolia of China", said the minister of culture Vyacheslav Dongak.

	Best of Luck with your festival and in preserving this part of your culture.  I first heard Vasilii Khuurak sing Kargiraa "Artii-Sayir" on the radio show "Sound and Spirit" with Ellen Kushner on Public Radio in New York, USA.  That music touched something deep inside of me, and ever since I have been fascinated by Tuva, its people, and their culture.
