First this year forest fires have started in Siberia. The Siberian regional centre of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations told Itar-Tass on Monday that taiga fires has been registered in the Chita region, Tuva republic, Khakassia republic and in Altai.

A brutal killing of two kids in Tuva in autumn 2006 has been solved. The murderer of two Tuvan kids, aged 3 and 5, was a 60-year-old former member of a religious sect, expelled for hard drinking. As soon as the criminal was discharged from prison, where he was serving term for raping his seven-year-old niece, he joined the religious sect that sent him to tend cattle to the village of Uyuk. However, he was expelled from the community for the violation of labor discipline and was employed by his relative, Tuvan prosecutor's senior aid Vasily Krivdik said.

A criminal action has been brought against the head of Tuvan inter-district tax police of the Federal Tax Service. Anatoly Ayzhi is charged with negligence that caused big-scale financial damage (Article 193, Part 1, the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), the Tuvan Government reported. The republican tax police chief failed to register the Legislative Chamber of the Great Khural, causing damage of $70,000 to the state.

The event is for two days at the university, sponsors are Tuvan State University and Tuva's Ministry of Education, speakers are Dr. Bridget F Gersten and Stephanie Funderburg from technical university in Novosibirsk.

 Today and tomorrow are the two last days of interactive internet-vote for the Siberian of the Year at www.sib21vek.ru. Among the 34 nominees is Tuvan first ballet-dancer, mother of the legendary young artist Nadya Rusheva (died 17) Natalia Doidalovna Azhikmaa Rusheva, 80. She misses only 100 votes to come into the leading 7 who on the morning of February 8 will be announced winners.

A deputy director of the Derzig-Aksy children mental home, Anatoli Oorzhak, who seized money from children, was brought into custody in Tuva. The Kaa-Khem district court of Tuva ruled to put into custody the deputy director of the children mental home, chief press officer of the Tuva republican prosecutor’s office Vasily Krivdik told Itar-Tass. Criminal proceedings were instituted against the pedagogue “for stealing with violence, which was not dangerous for life and health.”

A pregnant woman was hiding from doctors in Bay-Taiga Kozhuun (district), the Republic of Tuva, newlab.ru reports. The reason for such a behavior was the woman's wish to give birth to her baby in 2007, when she could have received a maternity stock certificate. The new law introducing a 250,000 ruble ($10000) state donation to the family for their second (third etc) child comes into force January 1, 2007.

 The mothers of three 19-year-old students are on a hunger strike since December 22 protesting against their sons' 5-months-long detainment for an accusation of murder. The mothers draw evidence proving their sons are innocent of the murder but they say that it is not taken into account by the invesigation. 'We have nothing to lose', - the women say putting their health and lives at risk.
